LEDs have special characteristics that a require a constant current driver to function optimally. Different LEDs, even from the same production batch, have different forward voltages. The forward voltage also changes with temperature and time. Small changes in the forward voltage can cause large changes in the LED current. This will negatively affect the LED brightness and color because they are both proportional to current, not voltage. In addition, the lifetime of LEDs decreases dramatically if overdriven.
