Although traditional lighting has been used for many years in all kinds of lighting applications, the technology is mature with little chance of further improvement. LED-based lighting, also known as Solid State Lighting (SSL), is already one of the most efficient light sources available, but SSL technology is still constantly improving and the efficacy will soon overtake all other traditional lighting technologies. Four main markets can be differentiated in SSL: Industrial, Residential, Commercial and Street Lighting. The low power SSL market will cover mostly residential and commercial.
