RBD-12 Series Overview Slide 3

By using the RECOM RBD-12 users have the flexibility to drive 5, 6, 7 or even 10 LEDs by using only 1 driver. For this reason it is possible to reduce the number of drivers needed for the application. The RBD-12 is able to boost the input voltage by factor 3. For example when using a 12 V battery, it takes the 12 V from the battery and boosts up around 40 V and regulates to the 350 mA. So designers can drive up to 10 LEDs in 1 string. With a buck driver designers can only drive 3 LEDs in one string. To achieve the same performance with a buck driver, users have to increase the current or use parallel strings. Then it is only possible to run an even number of LEDs. RECOM produced a great video showing the differences between using a buck-boost driver like RECOM RBD-12 and a buck driver.
