Die Produkte aus der Familie der linearen Komparatoren dienen der Evaluierung der relativen Größe von zwei analogen Eingangssignalen und der Erzeugung einer binären Ausgabe (zwei mögliche Statuswerte), die angibt, welches der beiden Signale größer ist. Von ihrer Funktion her stehen die linearen Komparatoren in enger Verbindung mit Operationsverstärkern. Sie sind allerdings speziell dazu ausgelegt, den Leerlaufbetrieb und die großen Eingangsdifferenzen zu tolerieren, die bei analogen Komparatoranwendungen üblich sind – und die bei standardmäßigen Operationsverstärkern zu unerwünschten Verhaltensweisen führen können.
