Google Launches Android Things – New OS for IoT Devices

Google, one of the largest tech companies in the world has just launched Android Things, an IoT platform the lets you build IoT connected devices using Android APIs and the Google cloud platform. The new Android Things is a combination of its previous IoT OS Brillo, which never really took off for developers. Android Things is an evolution of that project leveraging tools such as Android Studio, Andriod SDK, Google Play and the Google Cloud services, making it easier for developers and makers alike to build smart IoT devices.
Not only is Google offering a new OS but it is also adding support for Weave, which is an IoT communications platform that helps many devices connect to Google services for configuration and to communicate with other devices, including Google Assistant.
There are currently many developers such as Phillips Hue and Samsung SmartThings that already use Weave in their products. Google also announced that there will be many more manufactures of IoT products coming to the Weave platform such as Honeywell, TP-Link, Belkin and many more.
For the Makers
A big part of building and designing IoT products and services is prototyping and concept. Google has provided a list of supported hardware platforms for makers and developers to get started with including the popular Raspberry Pi 3, Intel Edison, NXP Pico and even the latest Intel Joule. Google is not the only IoT platform out there on the market, there are literally hundreds or even thousands. Just like any other IoT software company, they want you to build smart stuff for your house and use their platform to do it. With Google vast resources they should be able to provide developers with a comprehensive platform to build on. The key here is implementation and integration with other smart devices and the combination of Google Weave platform and their Cloud service, this really is a smart toolkit everyone will want to use in their smart devices.
