Image of Mikroelektronika MIKROE-2103 Color 3 Click™ BoardThe MikroElektronika MIKROE-2103 Color 3 click is a mikroBUS™ add-on board with an ams TCS3771 color sensor. The TCS3771 is also known as a light-to-digital converter and a narrow beam infrared LED which can also function as a proximity sensor. The IC performs well under a variety of lighting conditions. For example, it can be covered with different attenuation materials. As a proximity sensor, it has a large dynamic range of operation. It can take short distance measurements behind dark glass or it can be configured for longer distance measurement; for example, human presence detection in front of monitors or laptops.

The MIKROE-2103 board is designed to use a 3.3 V power supply only. The TCS3771 has an internal state machine that can put the device into a low power mode between successive RGBC and proximity measurements for additional power savings. TCS3771 is also fast enough to give off proximity information at a high rate of repetition. This makes it useful for proximity detection in portable devices (such as a phone coming near to a speaker’s ear). Color 3 click communicates with the target MCU through the mikroBUS™ I²C interface with additional functionality provided by an INT pin.

The ams TCS3771 provides red, green, blue, and clear (RGBC) light sensing and proximity detection. The sensor detects light intensity under a variety of lighting conditions and through a variety of attenuation materials. The large dynamic range of the proximity detection feature allows a wide range of uses from short range in cell phones to long range for TVs, monitors, or laptops. The sensor requires a voltage supply range of 2.7 V to 3.6 V and requires current supply of 330 μA at 3 V. The TCS3771 has an operational temperature range of -30°C to +70°C and comes in a small 6-SMD module.
