Environmental Combo Qwiic Breakout
Sparkfun combines ams' CCS811 VOC sensor and Bosch BME280 humidity, pressure, and temperature sensor in a unique breakout
SparkFun's CCS811/BME280 environmental combo breakout takes care of atmospheric-quality sensing needs with the popular CCS811 and BME280 ICs. This unique breakout provides a variety of environmental data, including barometric pressure, humidity, temperature, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and equivalent CO2 (or eCO2) levels. To make it even easier to use this breakout, all communication is enacted exclusively via I2C, utilizing SparkFun’s handy Qwiic system; however, they still have broken out 0.1" spaced pins for breadboard compatibility.
ams’ CCS811 is an ultra-low power digital gas sensor solution which integrates a metal oxide (MOX) gas sensor to detect a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for indoor air quality monitoring with a microcontroller unit (MCU), which includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and an I2C interface. CCS811 supports intelligent algorithms to process raw sensor measurements to output a TVOC value or eCO2 levels, where the main cause of VOCs is from humans. The CCS811 also has a feature that allows it to fine-tune its readings if it has access to the current humidity and temperature. The BME280 provides humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure allowing the sensors to work together to provide more accurate readings than would be possible individually. SparkFun also made it easy to interface with them via I2C.
Bosch Sensortec’s BME280 is register and performance compatible to their BMP280 digital pressure sensor and achieves high performance in all applications requiring humidity and pressure measurement. The humidity sensor provides an extremely fast response time for fast context awareness applications and high overall accuracy over a wide temperature range.
SparkFun's Qwiic connect system is an ecosystem of I2C sensors, actuators, shields, and cables that make prototyping faster and less prone to error. All Qwiic-enabled boards use a common 1 mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector. This reduces the amount of required PCB space, and polarized connections mean proper connections. I2C protocol is intended to allow multiple “slave” digital integrated circuits to communicate with one or more “master” chips with a mere two wires, and Qwiic boards are designed to utilize this capability by daisy chaining slave boards.
